Actor, director. (b. Aug. 1, 1931, Brooklyn, N.Y.) Rotund comic whose raspy, effeminate voice has also graced several animated features, including 1982's The Secret of NIMH 1986's An American Tail 1989's All Dogs Go to Heaven and 1991's An American Tail: Fievel Goes West DeLuise's screen appearances date back to Fail-Safe (1964), although he did the bulk of his movie work in the 1970s and 1980s. He's in Brooks' The 12 Chairs (1970), Blazing Saddles (1974), Silent Movie (1976), and History of the World-Part I (1981). Longtime pal Burt Reynolds made DeLuise a sidekick in The Cannonball Run (1980) and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982). Mel Brooks' wife Anne Bancroft directed him in his only starring screen vehicle to date, Fatso (1980). In 1993 he contributed one of the funniest scenes to Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights doing a parody of Marlon Brando's godfather role. He directed Hot Stuff (1979). His sons Peter and Michael are also actors.
