Highly regarded for rescuing the character of James Bond from the depths of self-parody, this darkly handsome leading man-who, with mustache, bears a resemblance to swashbuckling star Errol Flynn-began as a stage actor, graduating to film work in the late 1960s. He initially appeared in large-scale costume dramas such as The Lion in Winter (1968), Wuthering Heights (1970, as Heathcliff), and Mary, Queen of Scots (1971). He spent much of the 1970s working almost exclusively on stage, but returned to film work late in the decade. Dalton's spot in camp history is assured by his participation in Sextette (1978, playing Mae West's love interest), Flash Gordon (1980, as Prince Barin), and Brenda Starr (1989, released 1992, as Brooke Shields' mystery man). He first tackled Ian Fleming's Secret Agent 007 in The Living Daylights (1987), and followed that with Licence to Kill (1989). But he never cut up as Bond, the way he did as an Errol Flynn-ish movie star in The Rocketeer (1991). In 1994 Dalton inherited Clark Gable's role of Rhett Butler in the miniseries "Scarlett." | |
