Skilled actor who has risen to prominence in a number of (mostly comic) supporting roles. Rubinek was born in a German refugee camp, but grew up in Canada, where as a young man he became interested in acting. He was a founding member of the Toronto Free Theatre, and amassed numerous stage and TV credits in both Canada and the United States before making his film debut in Agency (1981). Rubinek won a Genie Award for his work in Ticket to Heaven (1981) as the best friend of a man who is brainwashed by a cult. He subsequently starred in the New York-set comedy Soup for One (1982), but has since worked mostly in supporting roles. His U.S. credits include Young Doctors in Love (1982), Against All Odds (1984), Wall Street (1987), and The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990). Rubinek was memorable as the egotistical movie director in Sweet Liberty (1986) and as the dime-store novelist W. W. Beauchamp in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992), but received particular acclaim for his starring performance as an Orthodox Jewish rabbi in the provocative Canadian film The Quarrel (1992). Recent credits include Undercover Blues, True Romance the TV movie And the Band Played On (all 1993), Death Wish V, I Love Trouble and Getting Even With Dad (all 1994). | |
