Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Plucky British actress, originally trained as a nurse, who made a sensational debut as the workingclass heroine in Educating Rita (1983, recreating a part she had played on the stage) and earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination in the process. Walters went on to star in Unfair Exchanges (1984), the very funny farce Car Trouble and She'll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas (both 1985) and had one of her best roles as real-life London madam Cynthia Payne in Personal Services (1987). She costarred opposite Phil Collins in Buster (1988), but most of her recent opportunities have been in character parts, such as Prick Up Your Ears (1987, as Joe Orton's mother), Mack the Knife (1989, as Mrs. Peachum), Stepping Out (1991, as one of Liza Minnelli's tapdance students), and The Summer House (1993, as a dowdy English mum). | |
