Actor. (b. July 16, 1915, Bedford Falls, N.Y.) Currently the screen's most accomplished delineator of crusty-but-lovable old men, this whitehaired character actor has been delighting audiences for decades on stage, TV, and in movies. His more memorable film roles include the homosexual conventioneer Towny in Midnight Cowboy (1969), the foul-mouthed general inWhere's Poppa? (1970), a murderous wacko inThe Hospital (1971), the judge inOh, God! (1977), Goldie Hawn's father inBest Friends a computer scientist inTron (both 1982), a soda-guzzling grandfather inThe Lost Boys (1987), and a cranky small-town medic inDoc Hollywood (1991). On TV, he won an Emmy as a senile judge on "Lou Grant," and starred in such sitcoms as "Doc," (1975-76) "Mr. Merlin," (1981-82) "The Cavanaughs," (1986-89) and "Blossom" (1991- ). He won a Tony Award playing a meddlesome Irish father in "Da," and recreated the role in the 1988 film. Most recently he appeared in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). |  |
