Alfred Molina Scroll down for movie list. Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Actor. (b. May 24, 1953, London.) Molina is one of those rare, chameleonlike performers who disappears into every part he plays. This large, ungainly-looking character actor performed in a two-man comedy act and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his film debut as the treacherous guide who almost gets the golden idol from Indiana Jones at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Alternating among films, theater, and TV since then, Molina appeared in Meantime (1983), Water, Eleni and Ladyhawke (all 1985) before commanding attention for his quiet, charming, and credible performance as the Russian sailor on leave in Letter to Brezhnev (also 1985). Two years later he played the showier part of playwright Joe Orton's lover Kenneth Halliwell in Prick Up Your Ears (1987) and won rave reviews. Following Manifesto (1988) and Drowning in the Shallow End (1989), he was Sally Field's Iranianborn husband who is transformed from a loving spouse to a threatening tyrant in Not Without My Daughter (1991), and then got one of his most sympathetic parts in Enchanted April (1992), as the stuffedshirt Briton who mellows in the Italian sun. He proved to be a perfect Western heavy in Maverick (1994) and was equally convincing as a Cuban emigrŽ in The Perez Family (1995). | |
