Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Another dazzling addition to a roster of chameleonlike British actors, Roth has quickly established his ability to disappear into almost any kind of role (and dialect). Originally interested in studying sculpture, he chose acting instead and gained notice in public theater and British TV movies, including Meantime by Mike Leigh and Made in Britain by David Leland. Roth's performance as the young hood Myron in The Hit (1984) won him the "Standard" newspaper's award for Best Newcomer; he went on to appear in A World Apart (1988), The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) and made vivid impressions as the hapless Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) and, especially, as the artist van Gogh in Robert Altman's powerful (and little-seen) Vincent & Theo (1990). He has become familiar to American audiences as the bleeding Mr. Orange in Reservoir Dogs (1992), the bored appliance salesman Nick in Bodies, Rest & Motion (1993), and a truly chilling Charles Starkweather (with expert Midwestern drawl) in the TV miniseries "Murder in the Heartland" (1993). Recent credits include Heart of Darkness (1994, telefilm), Pulp Fiction (also 1994, as Pumpkin), Little Odessa and Rob Roy (both 1995). | |
