Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Intense actress whose offbeat looks and formidable range made her a real casting challenge. She first gained notice as the chameleonlike murderer in a 1973 TV movie, EB> and followed that highly praised performance with such diverse big-screen characters as the daffy heiress in The Fortune (1975), the lucky hostess on The Big Bus the crafty car thief in Dandy, the All-American Girl (both 1976), and the astrologist in The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh (1980)-none of them exactly box-office champs. (She did have supporting roles in two 1978 hits, The Cheap Detective and Grease.) After two valiant but failed attempts at sitcoms, she moved on to Broadway and achieved genuine stardom there, winning a Tony award. She played a Brazilian rain-forest insect (!) in Meet the Applegates (1991), and was Oscar-nominated for re-creating her Broadway role in Six Degrees of Separation (1993). | |
