Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
As Sam Catchem, loyal sidekick to supercop Dick Tracy, this venerable supporting player had one of his choicest parts in recent memory in Warren Beatty's lavish 1990 comic-strip caper ... though it wasn't a very prestigious assignment for an actor of Cassel's credentials. Trained at New York City's American Theater Wing and the Actors' Studio, this crusty blond supporting actor appeared in many of buddy John Cassavetes' films, including Too Late Blues (1962), Faces (1968), which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and Minnie and Moskowitz (1971), which gave him a bona fide leading role opposite Cassavetes' wife, Gena Rowlands. He also helped produce Shadows (1960). In recent years he's been more visible than ever, often in smallish but colorful supporting roles. In 1993 alone he appeared in Boiling Point, Indecent Proposal (as Robert Redford's chauffeur), and Chain of Desire 1992's In the Soup gave him a costarring part. | |
