Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Droopy-eyed, dark, and suavely handsome, this extremely versatile actor was one of the most respected stage performers of his generation. His Broadway credits range from "Two Gentlemen of Verona" and "Threepenny Opera" to "Charley's Aunt" and the Fellini-inspired musical "Nine." His earliest film credits date back to 1971 Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me but he never achieved superstar status in the movies despite some strong roles, particularly as a political prisoner in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and a Salvadoran priest in the 1989 sleeper Romero He provided strong support in a number of A productions that didn't live up to their pedigree, including the Jane Fonda starrer The Morning After (1986) and the Kurt Russell/Mel Gibson/Michelle Pfeiffer romantic thriller Tequila Sunrise (1988). As brilliant defense lawyer Sandy Stern in Presumed Innocent (1990), Julia whisked the movie out from under star Harrison Ford, whose dour character was no match for the flamboyant attorney. Although taller and less jowly than artist Charles Addams' conception of the character, he played Gomez Addams in 1991's bigscreen comedy The Addams Family a hit that revealed his flair for wacky comedy. He and Anjelica Huston repeated their roles in the sequel, Addams Family Values (1993). One of Julia's most memorable roles-as Brazilian environmentalist and trade unionist Chico Mendes-was in the made-for-cable movie The Burning Season (1994), aired shortly before his death from a stroke. | |
