Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Polished Czechoslovakian actor who has logged screen time in romantic leads and sinister supporting roles alike, and who played the title role in the 1962 remake of The Phantom of the Opera but is best known as the twitching, mugging, scenestealing Sūreté inspector in the "Pink Panther" films: A Shot in the Dark (1964), The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976), Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978), Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), Curse of the Pink Panther (1983), and ten years later, Son of the Pink Panther (1993). At one time considered a British counterpart to Charles Boyer (whom he resembled), Lom didn't get as many starring assignments as he rated, but makes a lasting impression in character parts, from the surly mountain climber in Disney's Third Man on the Mountain (1959) to a pirate chieftain in Spartacus (1960) to Christopher Walken's sympathetic doctor in The Dead Zone (1983). He has also played Napoleon twice-in 1942's The Young Mr. Pitt and 1956's War and Peace | |
