A veteran of stage, screen, and television, Holbrook is probably best remembered for his portrayal of Mark Twain, which he has been performing as a one-man stage show on and off since 1954; he earned a Tony Award for its 1966 Broadway run. He made his film debut in The Group (1966) and has since appeared in many different films, often as an authority figure or a deceptively sinister villain. In addition to numerous stage performances, Holbrook has been seen in many TV productions, including the 1970-71 series "The Senator" (part of "The Bold Ones"), which earned him one of five Emmy Awards; the landmark TV movie That Certain Summer (1972), in which he played a homosexual father; and later, the sitcom "Evening Shade" (1990-94) as Burt Reynolds' father-inlaw. He is also in demand as a narrator. Holbrook is married to actress Dixie Carter, with whom he occasionally appeared on her hit series "Designing Women." | |
