Although this intelligent, attractive actress has been working steadily on stage since the late 1970s and in films since 1981's Four Friends it took the nondemanding role of Tess Trueheart in Dick Tracy (1990) to firmly fix her in the public eye. A versatile stage performer, Headly has fared best on film in light comedies, especially Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) in which she more than held her own opposite Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Formerly married to actor John Malkovich, with whom she appeared in Eleni (1985) and Making Mr. Right (1987). Headly adopted a New York accent for her chilling, critically acclaimed turn as a brutalized wife in Mortal Thoughts (1991). Her other films include Fandango (1985), Nadine (1987), Paperhouse and Stars and Bars (both 1988), the miniseries "Lonesome Dove" (1989), two 1993 made-for-TV projects, David Lynch's Hotel Room and And the Band Played On and Getting Even With Dad (1994).
