Mother of Laura Dern
One daughter with Bruce Dern drowned.
Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Feisty character actress with a flair for eccentric Southern ladies, best known for her Oscar-nominated turn as the tarttongued waitress Flo in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974). She has really come into her own (onscreen) in recent years, with meatier roles, and higher billing. In 1990 she costarred with her daughter Laura Dern in David Lynch's bizarre Wild at Heart playing her maniacally possessive mother; it earned her a second Oscar nomination. Then, in 1991, she and Laura became the first mother and daughter ever to earn simultaneous Oscar nominations, in Rambling Rose Laura taking the more flamboyant leading part this time, with Diane playing an independentthinking Southern woman. Ladd's first husband was actor Bruce Dern.
