Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Actor. (b. Jan. 3, 1932, Austin, Tex.) Shifty-eyed, mustachioed, nervous-looking actor who has raised the portrayal of comic jerks and loudmouths to an art form, particularly in the TV shows "Buffalo Bill" and "The Slap Maxwell Story." Coleman enacted small roles in TV shows and movies dating back to the 1960s, including a wacky neighbor on "That Girl," and can be seen in The Slender Thread (1965), Downhill Racer (1969), Bite the Bullet (1975), and North Dallas Forty (1979), to name just a few. Coleman's breakthrough role, though, was that of the callous employer in 9 to 5 (1980). He did get a shot at a rare sympathetic role in On Golden Pond (1981, as Jane Fonda's new boyfriend), but reverted to type in Tootsie (1982), and WarGames (1983), by which time his reputation as a first-rate screen lout was cemented. His starring vehicles-Short Time and Where the Heart Is (both 1990)-have been uneven, but Coleman continues to do fine work in supporting roles, such as his lisping porno king in Dragnet (1987) and the drag-queen insect in Meet the Applegates (1991). Recent films include There Goes the Neighborhood (1992), Amos & Andrew, The Beverly Hillbillies (both 1993), and Clifford (1994).
