Cathy Moriarty Scroll down for movie list. Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
Martin Scorsese counted on the fact that this young, striking blonde had no acting training when he cast her to play prizefighter Jake LaMotta's ravishing and much-abused wife, Vikki, in Raging Bull (1980). He wanted a fresh, unsullied natural performer who wouldn't be thrown by the improvisations of star Robert De Niro. And he was right: Moriarty's casual, seemingly effortless performance got her tagged an up-and-comer and won her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. But bad luck dogged her:Neighbors (1981), a John Belushi-Dan Aykroyd vehicle in which she played a suburban seductress, laid an egg at the box office after being trounced by critics. Plagued by bad advice, Moriarty dropped out of sight for several years, making a low-key return to the screen in the curious thriller White of the Eye (1987). More recently she has landed better parts in such higher-profile films as Soapdish (1991, as a predatory, transsexual soap opera star) and Matinee (1993, as flamboyant producer John Goodman's wry leading lady and companion), both of which revealed a disarming sense of humor. Other credits include Burndown (1989), Kindergarten Cop (1990), The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag (1992), Me and the Kid (1993), Forget Paris and Casper (both 1995). She also owns a fashionable pizzeria in Beverly Hills. | |
