Maybe I just can't stand Tom Cruise. I did not like "Rain Man". Good performace by Hoffman. Just yucky. Left me flat. When are we supposed to like Charlie Babbitt? Ever? I never did.

Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Young, self-centered hotshot goes home to the Midwest for his father's funeral, and learns not only that he's been cut out of his inheritance, but that he has a grown brother who's autistic, and who's been kept in an institution for most of his life. The balance of the film details the growing relationship between the two men. Top-drawer performances from Hoffman, as the idiot savant, and Cruise, as his selfish sibling, make this a must-see, even though the story meanders and becomes predictable. That's director Levinson as the examining psychiatrist near the end. Winner of Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Hoffman), and Screenplay (Ronald Bass and Barry Morrow).

I agree, I never quite got attatched to Charlie (Cruise's character) even when he became a "good" guy. But it's worth watching -- several times perhaps -- simply for Hoffman. He is amazing. I absolutly love him. The score I gave the film was, in all honesty, brought down because of Cruise.
