An engrossing movie. About as non Sci-Fi as it could get. Filmed as part adventure, part mystery. Nothing else is quite like it. One of Spielburgs best.

Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Superb, intelligent sci-fi (written by Spielberg) about UFO mystery that leads to first contact with alien beings. Dreyfuss is perfect Everyman struggling with frustrating enigma that finally becomes clear. Powerhouse special effects throughout, plus John Williams' evocative score. Vilmos Zsigmond's impressive cinematography won an Oscar. Reedited by Spielberg to tighten midsection and add alien-encounter material to finale and reissued in 1980 at 132m. as THE SPECIAL EDITION. (Then, for network showings, all existing footage was used!) Reedited yet again by Spielberg in 1998 to 137m. for a Collectors Edition. Panavision.

An awesome movie for it's time that can still stand today. I love this movie; it's got that 70s mystique that seems somehow timeless. Excellent performances.
