One of Disney's worst efforts. The look of the movie is all right, but the story is not coherent, and it never has a fantasy kind of feel. Cute in the wrong ways and times, jarring at others.

Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Disney's expensive, ambitious animated feature is a pretty good but unmemorable sword-and-sorcery tale about a young boy who must find powerful black cauldron before it falls into the hands of evil Horned King. Good storytelling for kids, with impressive effects animation for buffs. Supporting characters Gurgi (a good guy) and Creeper (a baddie) have all the best moments. Super Technirama 70

Not bad. Somewhat uneven, but it's an overall good story that convincingly portrays the Dark Ages. I give them a lot of credit for making this film primarily for the fantasy fans, rather than normal Disney fare (like 1981's Dragonslayer). Impressive animation. There's some good humor here, but it seems jarring at times. Elmer Bernstein's score is impressive.
