Routine mobster movie. Great cast does not do much with a routine script. Has a good visual look, but short on ineterst.

Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Absorbing, exceptionally good-looking adaptation of E. L. Doctorow's fanciful novel about young man who hooks up with gangster Dutch Schultz in the waning days of his crime career in the 1930s. Hoffman's commanding performance makes this flawed film worth watching, though the story's momentum erodes toward the end. Photographed by Nestor Almendros, with remarkable production design by Patrizia von Brandenstein. Screenplay by Tom Stoppard.
