Reviews
Mine: Very interesting. Great visuals. I'm not sure the combo of turn of the centry Paris and contemporary music works. The whole movie is very stylized. For me it was just not emotionally compelling. Still interesting to watch.
Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: A poet falls for a beautiful courtesan whom a jealous duke covets in this stylish musical, with music drawn from familiar 20th century sources.

I'm torn on this picture. Like Chris, i was a little bothered by the mixture of 1920's sights, and 1990's (and '80's) sound. (reminded me of what bugged me about 'A Knight's Tale'). But if you take the picture out of Drama Musical land and stick into into Fantasy Farce land, then it works. This picture obviously doent want to be taken seriously. And if you dont, you'll enjoy it. (unlike 'A Knights Tale' which i cant tell which it wanted to be, a Medieval coming of age movie or Fantasy exageration.) Nicole is BEAUITIFUL and does a good job with the sexiness and comedy throughout. John L. was facinationg creating the dwarf Tolouse. Ewan was good as Christian (very different from young Obi-Wan). The costumes, lights, sets, sound etc, alone are worth seeing this flick. I would of rated it higher if it was presented from the get-go as an farce, not a serious musical love-story. Think Marx Brothers and you'll enjoy it more.

I sent your review home with me because we planned to watch Moulin Rouge this weekend. And did, last night...Pat and I both really liked this movie. Interestingly, I liked the use of current music with the 1900's back drop the most. That really worked for both of us. Nicole is beautiful...I think she's a lousy actress, though, where Pat thinks she's excellent! Perhaps he is swayed by those big beautiful eyes?
