Dislikeable movie. The end is particularlly disheartening. This kid goes back to the place he grew up at at 25 to be an abortion doctor, when he does not believe in abortion. He knows how to be a oby/gyn but has no official training. I found the whole story to be very depressing. Charlize is very good looking. A dreary picture about how we should all do our "duty", even if it means living the rest of your life with someone you don't love or being something that you hate. Yuch!!!!!

Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Loving adaptation of John Irving's novel (by the author), telescoped from the sprawling story about a boy raised in a Maine orphanage (and abortion clinic) by an eccentric doctor who treats him like his own son-and begrudges the boy's decision to go out and see the world once he comes of age in the 1940s. Well cast, beautifully crafted; filmed on perfect locations throughout New England. Beautiful score by Rachel Portman and cinematography by Oliver Stapleton. Super 35.

I thought that The Cider House Rules was one of the best and most serious films I have ever seen.

Everyone loved this movie. Why? The best part was the scenery of New England in fall. I would suggest a nice road trip as an alternative to the movie.
