Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: |
Vivid Disney version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic, filmed in England, with Driscoll a fine Jim Hawkins and Newton the definitive Long John Silver. Changes the novel's original ending, but who's quibbling? ``Objectionable'' violence was deleted from 1975 reissue version but restored in 1992 tape/laser reissue.

Brian Keith O'Hara's rating:

Treasure Island is the perfect kids movie. Robert Newton's wonderful over-the-top Long John Silver is some of the best overacting in the history of movies. The guy has charm, and he makes the movie fun to watch. The second thing which makes Treasure Island a great kid's movie, is that the film's hero is a kid, Bobby Driscoll's "Jim Hawkins". Every other adult except Long John Silver, Dr. Livesy are either buffoons, miscreants, or roughians. A great kids movie, made for kids. Bosley Crowther of The New York Times, The film belongs to Robert Newton's wonderful Long John Silver, but a wonderful Bobby Driscoll is Jim Hawkins.
