Balding, chunky comic actor who originally endeared himself to TV audiences as the bumbling ensign in the 1960s sitcom "McHale's Navy" (which also spawned two feature films, 1964's McHale's Navy and 1965's McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force). Conway toiled in several other series-all flops-before appearing in a string of slapsticky family films, some of them for Disney (often teamed with Don Knotts), among them The World's Greatest Athlete (1973), The Apple Dumpling Gang (1975), Gus (1976), The Billion Dollar Hobo (1978), The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again (1979), The Prize Fighter (1979), and Private Eyes (1980). Paul Bartel directed him in the racetrack comedy The Longshot (1986), his last starring vehicle to date. He's best remembered for his hilarious antics on "The Carol Burnett Show," which earned him three Emmy Awards; he has recently starred in several video productions as Dorf, a comedic dwarf. | |
