Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
We can safely say that Blades is the only Panamanian pop star included in this book. Having already helped popularize salsa music, he began acting in small films produced during the early 1980s (often writing the music as well) and proved to be a natural. He first attracted attention as an egocentric salsa singer in Crossover Dreams (1985, which he cowrote), and eventually found roles in mainstream Hollywood fare, notably as a shrewd orderly in Critical Condition a cop in both Fatal Beauty (both 1987) and Predator 2 (1990), a levelheaded sheriff in The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), a bumbling crook in Disorganized Crime (1989), a bookie in Mo' Better Blues and a shady club owner in The Two Jakes (both 1990). A graduate of Harvard Law School, he is also a political activist and has considered running for president of Panama. Incidentally, his name is properly pronounced"Blah-des," but he has resigned himself to "Blaidz." | |
