After work as a professional model and several years as Kelly Capewell on the soap opera "Santa Barbara," Wright made an inauspicious film debut in Hollywood Vice Squad (1986) but really caught the public's attention as the beautiful Buttercup in The Princess Bride (1987). Since then, she has appeared opposite Sean Penn in State of Grace (1990), Jason Patric in Denial (1991), and Robin Williams in Toys (1992). A great opportunity came when Annette Bening bowed out of The Playboys (1992), and she was cast instead; the film boasted her best performance to date, as Tara, the strongwilled woman who has a baby out of wedlock in a rural Irish town. In real life, Wright lived with Penn for some time and had two children with him. Recent credits include Forrest Gump (1994, as the title character's sweetheart, Jenny), and The Crossing Guard (1995, directed by Penn).
