When most people think of this short, dark-haired, gravelly voiced actor today, they call to mind the character of rumpled, eccentric detective Lieutenant Columbo, a character he's been playing on the small screen for more than a quartercentury (beginning with 1967's Prescription: Murder and every three or four weeks from 1971 to 1977 on the "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie"). His feature-film career extends back to 1958's Wind Across the Everglades and while he spent many years playing dese-dem-dose gangsters of both dramatic and comedic bent-earning Supporting Actor Oscar nominations for such characterizations in 1960's Murder, Inc and 1961's Pocketful of Miracleshe's been infinitely more entertaining in recent years, showing his versatility in both leading and supporting roles. | |
