Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:
We all knew that Balsam, playing the cynical, skeptical private detective Arbogast in Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), never had a chance against Anthony Perkins' Norman Bates-but we all jumped out of our seats when he was knifed to death at the top of a staircase. A veteran of the New York stage and an alumnus of the famous Actors' Studio, Balsam has appeared in dozens of movies since debuting in 1954's On the Waterfront He turned in an excellent performance, in an "everyman" character type, as the jury foreman in 12 Angry Men (1957). Sometimes cranky, sometimes comical, sometimes both, he always makes his presence felt, even in marginal roles. He's particularly good in ensemblecast pictures such as Seven Days in May (1964), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Murder on the Orient Express, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (both 1974), and All the President's Men (1976). He received an Oscar for his supporting role as Jason Robards' sensible brother in A Thousand Clowns (1965). From 1979 to 1981 he joined the cast of TV's "Archie Bunker's Place," as Carroll O'Connor's business partner. In 1991 Balsam cameoed as a judge in Martin Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear a nod to the fact that he appeared in the 1962 original. | |
