Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia: It's unfortunate when bad movies happen to a good actor, and even more so when those movies are the first that pop into your head when he comes to mind. Such is the case with this tall, lanky (usually bearded) leading man. A Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, Kristofferson has had a varied career that includes a stint in the Army and a spell as an English Literature teacher. In the 1960s he became a successful country-andWestern music star (he frequently contributes songs to his and others' films) and, trading on that reputation, he made his big-screen debut in Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie (1971).
Kristofferson gave a series of craggy, effective performances in the 1970s, most notably as the outlaw Billy in Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) and as the understanding rancher who comforts recent widow Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974). He fared better than costar Barbra Streisand (with critics anyway) in the 1976 remake of a A Star Is Born playing a doomed rock star, then survived Michael Cimino's notoriously sprawling Western epic Heaven's Gate (1980). But nothing, apparently, could completely squelch his appeal as a tough, cool loner with heart. He teamed with fellow country-music superstar Willie Nelson in 1984's Songwriter (which earned him an Oscar nomination for Original Song Score). The generally laid-back Kristofferson has a likeable screen presence that has helped him overcome more than his share of bad movies. | |
