Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

From the minute you saw him in Top Gun (1986), playing the straight-arrow pal to reckless test pilot Tom Cruise, you knew he wouldn't make it past the fourth reel. And he didn't. The second-banana role fit Edwards like a glove, but this tall, openfaced, likable young actor also has plenty of leading roles under his tightly notched belt. In TV commercials since he was 16, Edwards attended London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and USC before making his tyro film appearance in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High He made a very convincing nerd in Revenge of the Nerds (1984), a lowbrow comedy hit that spawned a 1987 sequel (in which, wisely, he restricted his role to a cameo appearance). 1985's Gotcha! and The Sure Thing moved his career along, although the ponderous Summer Heat (1987) and the ridiculous Miracle Mile (1989) didn't do him any good. Edwards received his most favorable notices in the title role of Mr. North (1988), playing the forthright, ingenious young man who electrifies a Prohibition-era community. Although still young-looking enough to play a student, he actually played a college counselor in How I Got Into College (1989), and a naive suburban cop transferred to the funky part of town with world-weary Forest Whitaker in Downtown (1990). He had a recurring role on TV's "Northern Exposure" (1992-93) and joined the cast of "E.R." (1994-). Edwards wasn't the first in his family to be involved in the industry: His grandfather designed Walt Disney Studios in the 1930s.
